Cloud computing has already become a big focal point for a lot of application developers and is going to continue to rise and expand. Web technology isn’t a thing of “page viewing” anymore, and has become a highly advanced programming structure.

In a recent survey of about 1000 tech experts and social media analysts, Elon University researchers found that most of their respondents said Internet users will “live mostly in the cloud” by 2020. They predict we’ll be working primarily through web-based and mobile apps, such as Facebook and Google Docs, and less on software installed on our own desktops.
The majority of respondents think that in the future, we’ll use a hybrid of cloud and desktop computing, with web-based programs continuing to grow in their scope and role.
This question about cloud-based applications was raised as part of a 10-question survey conducted jointly with the Pew Research Center. The statement that leads us to this 71% figure of majority agreement reads thus:
“By 2020, most people won’t do their work with software running on a general-purpose PC. Instead, they will work in Internet -based applications such as Google Docs, and in applications run from smartphones. Aspiring application developers will develop for smartphone vendors and companies that provide Internet-based applications, because most innovative work will be done in that domain, instead of designing applications that run on a PC operating system.”
The advantage of instant access to information regardless of device, operating system or location is a huge factor in the dominance of web apps over desktop apps. “The cloud” is accessible from work, from home, from any location with an Internet connection, and increasingly, from our ever-smarter mobile devices.

In my opinion, although cloud computing would be getting most of the attention, the more serious and advanced operations wouldn’t leave the desktop (or localized server in some cases). I do not foresee someone doing graphic design or any other advanced work on a smartphone. Not to mention the whole trusting in telecommunications and remote access to get work done, if communications are down you are still going to need a way to get work done.
I also think security IS a major concern as far as cloud computing goes. Especially for companies that need that high security. However, for companies that don’t need extremely high levels of security, I think this is a great alternative to sitting in the office. Also, what about hard drive failure? A cloud can be easily accessed from any internet connection!
Anyway, I guess I was just ten years a head of my time back in 1999 when I launched my first web based company, telezoo.com. Given the rise of the cloud, perhaps, it’s time to re-launch it again.
Telezoo was an all Microsoft shop social networking site that allowed the telecom and IT folks to connect – 5 years before the myspace and facebook of the world.
. The telecom and networking solution providers simply entered their solution’s specs via the web into their telezoo account in the cloud,
. Telezoo platform normalized their specs and stacked them up against each other
. The IT buyers simply typed in their requirements and would get an apple to apple comparison of the solution offerings by various vendors and then, connect with the companies – all in the cloud.
